Rules and Procedures

General:

The competition will be open to all students attending high school, grades 10 to 12 or levels 1 to 3, in St. John’s and Mount Pearl. This will include Gonzaga, Holy Heart of Mary, Prince of Wales Collegiate, Waterford Valley High, St. Kevin’s High and St. Bonaventure’s College in St. Johns; O’Donel High and Mount Pearl Senior High in Mount Pearl.

Each student may submit an original short story of no more than 1500 words in the current school year. Deadline for submission of entries will be May 15th, 2024 with awards presented in the Fall.

Awards and sponsors:

The Kiwanis Club of St. John’s is the primary sponsor of the competition with the top award

being identified as the Kiwanis High School Short Story Award.
IG Wealth Management, our corporate sponsor, is providing the cash awards.

There will be three awards:

1st $1000, 2nd $500 and 3rd $250.

Each cash award winner will also receive a plaque with his/her name on it.

The 1st place winner’s name will be engraved on a perpetual trophy. This trophy will reside in the winner’s school the following year.

How to submit entries:

The short story is to be submitted via email by May 15 of the current school year. The entry form may be found through the Kiwanis Club of St. John’s website, kiwanisclubstjohns.ca.

The submission must be in English, using MS Word. The entrant’s name, school, story title, other biographical information and agreement with the terms and conditions is to be provided on the entry form at the time of submission.

Once you have completed your submission form and hit submit, you should receive an email confirming receipt of your completed form (please ensure it was received – you may need to check your junk folder as well) . Once you have received confirmation that your form was received, please email your short story to Kiwanis to the email listed below. Judging:

All judging will be done blind, so the author’s name should not appear on the cover page or any other page of the story.

There will be two Review Panels:
The first panel will be comprised of retired teachers whose role will be to review all submissions, determine the top 20 to 25 short stories and pass them on to the Final Review Panel.

A Final Panel of established writers will choose a short list of not more than 10 submissions and select the top 3 short stories.

All short listed authors will be invited to attend the awards ceremony to be held in the fall of the following school year. Each author will be invited to read an excerpt from their story.

Judges will provide written comments on each of the short listed stories.

Judges will provide editorial suggestions for the top 3 stories.

Applicant’s Declaration:

(Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification.) I hereby certify that:

1. The work is original.
2. It has been composed solely by the undersigned.
3. It has not won any public competition and has not been published or publicly

presented on any social network: website, blog, Facebook, etc. I accept the conditions below:

  1. The judges’ decision is final.
  2. Awards will only be presented if a sufficient number of submissions have been received.
  3. I accept that the sponsors will not be responsible for any lost or stolen submissions, damage or errors that occur due to negligence, accidents, technical failures, website viruses or property damage.
  4. I agree to present an excerpt from my work at the awards ceremony.
  5. I agree to allow my name to be used for publicity or promotional purposes related to this competition.
  6. I agree to publication as may be arranged by the sponsor, Kiwanis Club of St. John’s, without further compensation, while retaining copyright for myself.
